Diet Considerations For Treatment of Psoriasis

While psoriasis is primarily an autoimmune disorder, suggesting that any real treatment needs to address the underlying autoimmune response gone awry, its basic manifestation is in form of inflammation. Evidence suggests, therefore, that those suffering from psoriasis can benefit substantially from consuming an anti-inflammatory diet and avoiding those foods that cause an allergic or inflammatory response.

As it turns out, a great many psoriasis patients have an increased sensitivity to gluten, and find that their symptoms improve significantly after switching to a gluten-free diet.

An anti-inflammatory diet involves favoring beneficial fats such as those found in cold-water fish, olive oil, seeds and nuts over detrimental fats like saturated fats, trans fats, fried foods and poor quality oils such as vegetable, corn, soy, safflower and sunflower oils.

Good and Bad Omega Fatty Acids

Beneficial fats are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have long been touted to be the holy grail of healthy eating. Conversely, detrimental fats are high in omega-6 fatty acids, an excessive amount of which can cause an inflammatory response in the human body.

Before the industrial revolution, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the average American diet was approximately 3:1, largely because there were no ready sources of omega-6 vegetable oils. Instead, most people consumed a diet that was much higher in fish or free-range beef or bison, which was high in omega-3. With the industrial revolution came the technology to refine various forms of vegetable oils, changing the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the average modern American diet to around 11:1.

Researchers believe that the human body has not yet been able to adapt to this rapid shift in consumption of fatty acids, causing increased inflammation and higher incidence of inflammatory diseases and conditions. Western cultures consume tremendous amounts of vegetable oils, especially in processed foods. Between 1909 and 1999, production of soy oil for food consumption increased 1000 times. Japan, by the way, has the lowest per-capital prevalence of psoriasis, worldwide.


Higher Prevalence of Corn-Fed Cattle

In this day and age, cattle, poultry, and domestically raised fish are being raised on cornmeal and soy-based feedstock, significantly raising the omega-6 content of the resulting meat and fish products. Tissues of farm animals raised on grass, worms or other natural diets are much higher in omega-3 fatty acids.

The much-touted “marbling” seen in domestic beef products is a direct result of cattle that have been raised on a diet of corn and soy, and these products contain much higher amounts of omega-6 fatty acid when compared with grass-fed cattle, and lower amounts of omega-3. While meat from cattle raised on grassland may contain as much as 4 percent omega-3 fatty acids, cattle raised on corn generally contain only 1/2 percent omega-3.

In addition to reducing consumption of omega-6 and increasing consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, an anti-inflammatory diet emphasizes an abundance of whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits. A number of seasonings can also block inflammatory response, including red pepper, turmeric, cloves, cumin, ginger, anise, basil, fennel, garlic, rosemary and pomegranate.

While switching to an anti-inflammatory diet may not be the total cure for psoriasis, it has been proven to have substantial benefits, among them reduction of cardiac risk factors. Psoriasis patients are known to be at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, so a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids is highly recommended to reduce that risk. Inflammation is also linked to a variety of other conditions and diseases, including digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. For these reasons, most researchers agree that diet plays an important part in managing and treating symptoms of psoriasis.

What is life without good health? Most of the things that most of us enjoy most of all, such as playing with our children or grandchildren, playing sport with friends, walking in the park with our loved ones, doing something else with our loved one which is generally not discussed in polite society, and a myriad other partly physical activities, are significantly less enjoyable for those unfortunate enough to live without good health.

Obviously health is doubly important during pregnancy. Some people live with permanent health problems, incurable conditions and, although some of them manage to enjoy life, they probably struggle to do so and would do almost anything to have better health. That is why we should never take our health for granted.

The standard advice of eating sensibly and exercising regularly is really not very difficult to follow, and yet an increasingly huge number of people these days are overweight, diabetic, stressed or depressed, have heart disease or high blood pressure, and yet nearly all of these conditions could be avoided by following those two, simple pieces of advice. They are both especially applicable to pregnant women. How many ways are there, for example, to incorporate a bit of exercise into your daily routine?

Take the stairs instead of the lift
Invest in a bicycle and use it
Walk, walk, walk
Go jogging in the park
Do some sit ups, push ups and squats


It’s Easy

Eating sensibly is really a no brainer. We all know what constitutes junk food, but some of us simply lack the will power to stop ourselves from eating the stuff. Being pregnant makes a difference, of course. There could be no greater incentive to eat right than having a baby growing inside you. Eat your fruit and vegetables, plus just enough potatoes, bread or rice for carbohydrates, and not too much fat or sugar. Repeat a hundred times: not too much fat or sugar.

A much better way to lose weight than by counting the calories, however, is by burning them. If you live on the twentieth floor, take the stairs up to the fifth and then take the lift the rest of the way. Climbing is better exercise than descending, but walking down a few floors is also good exercise. If you live in a house, maybe you work on the tenth floor. Walk up a few floors, each and every time you go up. This absolutely applies to pregnant women, too, but perhaps just a floor or two less. Perhaps the canteen is just a few floors below you. If so, walk.

It’s easier and less time consuming than going to a gymnasium. And on that subject, some people enjoy running on a treadmill, half an hour of going nowhere with no change of scenery. If that includes you then go to a gym and tread the mill, but if not then you may prefer actually going somewhere, breathing fresh air and seeing something. Start by walking for just ten minutes if that is as much as you can manage, and gradually work your way up to walking faster and faster. Then it is time to start running, for longer and longer, further and further. Most public parks have paths or running tracks, and some forests or woodlands have tracks, which are even more fun to run on. Running is not just a good way to burn calories and strengthen the heart, it is the best. However, walking at a reasonable speed is also very good and probably wiser during pregnancy.

Walk to the shops. Carrying the shopping home is really good, all round exercise. At the very least you could carry it to the car rather than using a trolley. Walk to your friends’ house if it is not too far. Walk around your local shopping centre, do a few laps. You don’t need running shoes, you don’t need appropriate clothing unless you are pregnant, and you certainly don’t need a treadmill. In fact you don’t actually need anything to go for a walk.


Do It at Home

Especially if you are pregnant, there is no need to go anywhere to exercise. So long as you have appropriate maternity wear, all you need is an exercise mat on the floor. Jumping may not be a good idea for pregnant mums, but just stretch your arms and legs, do some gentle squats, sit ups and push ups. Find positions where the weight resistance is enough to make you breathe hard but not too much. Be sure to wear comfortable, stretchy clothing and you can choose your own pace and duration. Exercise is important but it need not be difficult. You can do it in front of the TV or to the sound of music. Make a dance routine of it. Don’t overdo it but do it regularly.

Accelerated partial radiation allows the doctor to aim with laser-like precision right at the tumor instead of scattering the radiation over the entire breast.


Internal Medicine


An internal medicine doctor (IMD) diagnoses and treats adults with internal diseases. They can also be a general practioner in practice, but less and less all the time. Many IMD’s keep typical office hours, but can also be found practicing in hospitals and laboratories conducting research on specific diseases found in adults. Within internal medicine there are now at least 12 major sub-specialties that doctors can choose to work on. Technology and research has opened the door for them to move into like fields and become specialists. Some include:

  • Cardiology – This is concerned with the functioning and health of the human heart, blood vessels, and the circulation of blood through the body.
  • Geriatrics – With an aging population in the United States, this field is exploding as it cares for the well-being of adults over 55. Assessment, education, rehabilitation, and long-term care make up this practice.
  • Hematology – This is concerned with disorders of the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic systems. These include aplastic anemia and other bone marrow failures, abnormal clotting and bleeding, Hodgkin’s Disease, leukemia, lymphoma, and others.


ENT Treatment


Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) medicine has also seen many changes over the last few decades. The following are evolving areas of specialization for the ENT physician:

  • Allergy Treatment – While there are no cures for allergies, yet, there has been much improvement in both the diagnosis and treatment of allergies, and how to help people reduce the suffering from allergens. Yet, it seems that there are more, and worse, cases of allergies than ever before. Some doctors believe this is a result of humans living in more closed environments, whether it is in a home or office, or even a car. We spend most of our time in these sealed atmospheres, and they have become breeding grounds for allergens from mold, pollen, and other airborne irritants. Histamine is created when these attacks occur, but keeping the allergens from attaching themselves to masts reduces the effect of allergies. HEPA filters for vacuum cleaners, better air conditioning systems, and education of what causes a particular patient allergies have improved dramatically the last few decades.
  • Audiology – Today, audiologists and the practice of audiology have widespread visibility, and are found in public schools, health care centers, private practices, nursing homes, community agencies, the military, hospitals, colleges and universities, hearing aid dispensing centers, hearing and speech centers. They test hearing and listening ability, fit hearing aids and assistive listening devices, and provide training and rehabilitation programs for individuals with hearing and listening disorders. How To Know If You Are Depressed

Have you ever experienced waking up in the morning and feeling that something is wrong? Do you feel a heavy heart for no particular reason at all? Do you want to sleep most of the time? Most people do not know the difference between sadness and depression, and oftentimes the two are interchanged; some people believe that they are the same. What Is Depression?


People who are going through some difficulties and/or challenges in life go through a state of sadness. Now there’s nothing wrong with being sad; it is just a normal feeling that all people feel, experience, and go through. However, when the feeling of sadness is so intense and it lasts for a very long period of time, say for weeks straight, or months, then it’s no longer sadness – it is depression. Medical doctors refer to this as clinical depression and it is treatable condition.


Signs of Depression


Not all people who feel sad are depressed and so it is important to identify properly the symptoms of depression. Medical, health, and mental experts have identified five (5) of the most common symptoms of depression, as follows:

An Unhappy Mood – People who are suffering from depression are literally unhappy. This is most evident early in the morning as the person wakes up. The general feeling of a depressed person is he or she would rather stay in bed.

Insomnia or Hypersomnia – A depressed person can suffer these two extremes: 1) have difficulty sleeping at night, or 2) oversleep during daytime.  A depressed person is normally observed to have difficulty sleeping at night and they toss and turn in bed until the wee hours of the morning. This is referred to as insomnia. On the opposite extreme, a depressed person may also sleep the entire day, only waking up to eat or to so some menial activities but only to go back to the bed or couch and sleep again.

Fatigue – A depressed person always feels tired, even though he or she has not done anything.

Loss of Interest – The loss of interest on anything one used to love and enjoy is another sign of depression. If a person, for example, used to love watching a television show, and now he or she prefers that the TV is turned off, that should raise the warning sign that the person may be suffering from depression.


What to Do?


The good news is: clinical depression is treatable. So if you feel that you are going through depression or someone you know is, go see your doctor. There are also things that you can do to alleviate the symptoms. A good dose of the morning sunshine will do you much good as it “awakens” your happy hormones called endorphins. Exercise can also help because the activities will also jumpstart your body to activate the “happy hormones”. Now, that is completely true when you are talking about foods that are processed and created in a lab but we are focusing our attention on those all-natural healthy carbs found in whole grains, pasta, and even pitas. These should be the building blocks of your meals for long-lasting energy. Plus for guys there is the added bonus of that fiber helping reduce the risk of prostate cancer. You can also include oats in this list which is why they are always a top choice at breakfast! High fiber keeps you full and the grains are mellower on your blood glucose levels to keep energy even-keel. Three to four servings per day is just what the nutrition expert ordered!
  • Spinach – Don’t knock Popeye, that guy was on to something! Leafy green vegetables like spinach are packed full of great nutrients that help with your mood, burn calories, boost your sexual prowess, and aid with your heart health. You want at least two servings of lean meat per day if not more. Eggs are a great compliment to breakfast and your pre and post-workout meals should always include protein.
  • Eggs & Dairy – Calcium, reduced risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of being overweight are all noted affects of consuming a lot of milk. Eggs are a fantastic source of protein and even with the cholesterol in them they don’t actually raise your cholesterol. Dairy also gets you lots of Vitamin D. Along with milk and eggs, yogurt is a fantastic source of dairy with protein that is great for snacks.
  • Nuts & Seeds – Fiber, protein, vitamins, and fats all rolled into a simple, crunchy snack! This last superfood is one of the most enjoyable because there is a lot of variety and who doesn’t like nuts? You can find antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and even amino acids within nuts and seeds. They are great by the handful and can also easily be sprinkled onto a nice leafy salad. Eating nuts can also help with increasing your natural resting caloric burn rate. Pretty awesome!

Those are five great superfoods that you should be eating every day. If you aren’t already try to start shifting your diet slowly to incorporate them. Instead of going cold turkey and trying to revamp your entire diet at once, ease into things by adjusting your breakfast first. Switch to whole grain oats with some eggs to start and see how much better you look and feel after only a week. Then make small adjustments in other areas until you are a lean, mean, fat burning machine!

Developing Killer Legs

A well developed pair of legs not only looks good but is also a great part of a healthy lifestyle. Having muscle strength and endurance in your lower body just makes life easier. You can perform better in sports, lift things more easily, and just generally get more out of life.

So how do you develop a killer set of legs? One of the best ways is by utilizing the properties of a heavy-light workout. You alternate between heavy days and light days to build strength, power, endurance, and shape. This type of program is great for a wide range of people because it covers more aspects of usefulness than just building bigger muscles; we are also looking to build useful muscles.

The Workout

You will have a heavy day and a light day. You can mix up days however you would like such as simply alternating every-other workout or even going two-heavy days followed by two-light days. You might even decide to mix things up by doing both those options to keep your legs guessing! No matter which workout you are doing all reps should be done at a slower pace and perfect form should be the goal.

The Heavy Day

We will focus on the big exercises that build muscle size and strength. A rest period of 1 to 2 minutes between each set is recommended. Warm-up with 10 minutes of light cardio to get blood flowing in the muscles and then do light stretching for the entire lower body before you get started. The final set of each exercise should be the heaviest weight you can handle for the prescribed reps with prior sets being warm-ups progressing up in weight.

  • Squats – 5 sets of 5 to 8 repetitions – If you are new to squats start in a Smith Machine to help with balance and form.
  • Stiff-Legged Deadlifts – 4 sets of 5 to 8 repetitions – Use a barbell but only load 25 lb plates or stand on a box to ensure maximum stretch.
  • Leg Press – 4 sets of 6 to 8 repetitions – Aim for a full range of motion. Don’t load on more weight than you can handle then just do half repetitions.
  • Lying Leg Curls – 3 sets of 6 to 8 repetitions – Go slow and hold the contraction for a two-count at the top.
  • Hack Squats – 3 sets of 6 to 8 repetitions
  • Seated Calf Raises – 3 sets of 6 to 8 repetitions – Go very slow and hold the stretch for a 3 count and contraction for a 3 count.
  • Standing Calf Raises – 3 sets of 6 to 8 repetitions – Go very slow and hold the stretch for a 3 count and contraction for a 3 count.

The Light Day

Light days are all about endurance and muscle shape. Warm-up with 10 minutes of light cardio to get blood flowing in the muscles and then do light stretching for the entire lower body before you get started. For these exercises you will pick a weight that you can handle (70% of maximum for rep range) and then proceed to do all 5 sets with that weight resting only 30 seconds between each set.

  • Dumbbell Squats – 5 sets of 12 reps
  • Dumbbell Lunges – 5 sets of 12 reps
  • Hamstring Curls – 5 sets of 12 reps – Standing or lying down, single or double leg.
  • Leg Extensions – 5 sets of 12 reps
  • Standing Calf Raises – 5 sets of 12 reps – Full range of motion with no bouncing.
  • Donkey Calf Raises – 5 sets of 12 reps (or seated calf raises if your gym doesn’t have a donkey machine)

The light day might seem easy at first but you should really start to feel it by the third set. If not make sure to increase the weight slightly the next session. But, even if you don’t feel it too much during the workout, be prepared for some additional soreness the next day because endurance work targets different muscle fibers. Make sure to stretch after each workout as well to speed up recovery.
